An Oasis in the Desert: IVC Hospital is Saving Lives of Expectant Mothers and their Unborn Babies

Grace

Grace’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of compassionate care in the face of adversity. Rushed to IVC Milimani Hospital in the throes of labor, her journey was fraught with challenges. Living in a tin house with her four children, abandoned by her husband, Grace’s circumstances were dire. But amidst the turmoil, a glimmer of hope shone through.

With her previous pregnancy ending in a C-section just over a year ago, Grace faced heightened risks. Unable to reach her regular government hospital for delivery, IVC Milimani Hospital emerged as a beacon of hope, barely a kilometer away from her home.

Despite her fears of affording the care she so desperately needed, Grace’s pain and the imminent arrival of her child left her with little choice but to accept help.

Arriving at the hospital with just Ksh 1,500 (USD 10.00) to her name, Grace found herself in the hands of angels. The midwives, recognizing the urgency of her situation, sprang into action. Despite the absence of an operating theater, they worked tirelessly to ensure the safe delivery of both mother and child.

Grace’s gratitude knows no bounds. “I have never been treated so well in a hospital,” she recounts. “Everyone treated me with kindness and gave me the care I needed.” Her journey didn’t end there. Despite her husband’s abandonment and financial struggles, Grace persevered. “I don’t have a regular job,” Grace explained, “but I make ends meet by doing people’s laundry and cleaning houses. It’s not easy, but it puts food on the table and keeps a roof over our heads.” Despite her meager earnings, Grace has so far paid Ksh 3,500 (USD 23.00) towards her hospital bill. It was a testament to her determination and unwavering commitment to her family’s well-being. With a resolute spirit, Grace made a promise to herself and the hospital staff. “I am determined to pay the full amount of Ksh 10,000 (USD 67.00),” she declared. It wasn’t just about settling a debt; it was about honouring her word and taking responsibility for her family’s health and future.

But Grace’s story is not unique. Countless women like her face similar struggles every day. IVC Milimani Hospital’s commitment to reaching these women and providing lifesaving care is unparalleled. With just USD 70.00 per delivery, the hospital can continue to make a difference in the lives of women like Grace. Additionally, with USD 120, they can provide crucial antenatal care and safe deliveries, ensuring the early detection of high-risk pregnancies and reducing morbidity rates.

Grace’s journey may have been fraught with challenges, but her resilience and the compassionate care she received serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of accessible healthcare. Through continued support for hospitals like IVC Milimani, we can help save lives and ensure that no woman is left behind in her time of need
